9 Things to Do in York, England – Complete Guide to the City

York is one of the best destinations for a city break or a weekend getaway in England. It’s a super charming city full of many incredible things to see and do, as well as places to eat or grab a drink. In case you were looking for a complete city guide that includes all the top things to do in York, as well as the best tours, restaurants and more useful info, you’ll find everything in the article below! It includes everything you need to know before you visit York!

I was in York at the beginning of this year for a 4-day trip and I really loved it! York is super cute and walkable – you can see the entirety of inside the city walls in a day.

But my recommendation is to book a whole weekend away to York – this is kind of a perfect scenario for anyone that is looking for a relaxed getaway.

Okay, let’s dive right into it!

Quick info about York, UK

Is York worth visiting, really? My honest answer is: YES! Definitely! York is a place of rich history and culture where you will find charming streets, cute shops and eateries and interesting museums everywhere you look. Plus frequent festivals and events for those of you that are in for a bit of extra fun!

Trust me, there are so many things to do in York! From the impressive York Minster (which is, basically, one of the most well-known York attractions) to the entire stone wall that circles the city, tons of Harry Potter sites, chocolate tours, ghost walks, fine dining restaurants, historic homes and some cute parks, you can already understand that York caters to all types of travellers out there!

Where is York located?

York is located in North Yorkshire, in the northern part of England. It is only 35 km (22 miles) away from Leeds, another cute city that I really enjoyed.

9 Best things to do in York, UK

Below you will find my list of the best things to do in York – these are things that any first-time visitor should check out (if time allows) in order to completely understand the charm of this city.

TIP: One thing to know right from the start: if you’re planning to visit most of the popular attractions in York, a very good idea would be to buy a York Pass. It’s an excellent way to save on costs – it includes more than 45 things to visit in York and around. I’ll talk about it in more detail in this special section below.

1 – Take a York city tour

River Ouse in York UK

Whenever I land in a relatively small, walkable city, one of the first things I do is take a stroll around or book a city tour. I think it’s one of the best ideas if you’re eager to find out more about the city you’re going to spend the following days in right from the start!

This is especially true when it comes to a historic city such as York – the city was founded by the Romans after all! And the best part about it is that you have so many options to choose from – from the classic Hop On Hop Off buses to themed York walking tours on the gorgeous cobbled streets – ghost walks, chocolate tours, boat cruises, Harry Potter tours, a cat trail and many, many more.

I won’t get into detail about them here because you’ll find my complete list of recommended tours of York in this section down below.

NOTE: Alternatively, if you want to experience Leeds from a different perspective, I recommend taking a ride in one of the yellow water taxis. The price is only £1/person/journey and it takes you from Leeds Docks to Granary Wharf. More information on their website here. There is also a shorter, free taxi boat from Leeds Docks.

2 – Walk the city wall – The Bar Walls

The York Wall
Exploring York Wall, Yorkshire

One thing you will notice right after you set foot in York is its impressive stone walls. The Bar Walls is the official name for the thick stone walls that go all around the city. These were once Roman fortifications that protected York, now transformed into one of the most interesting “York things” to do and one of the best-preserved city walls in all of England.

Although incomplete, walking around the city on these walls is an excellent option for those in search of free things to do in York city centre – and it will only take around 2 hours (3.4 km). Plus, the view over the famous Minster from the walls is worth the effort.

The walls are free to visit and open from 8:00 AM ‘till sunset. Bad weather conditions or repairs might make them inaccessible to explore. You can check out a map of the trail here.

3 – Visit the impressive cathedral – York Minster

York, England in the UK
York Minster in Yorkshire, England

Except for being one of the best things to do in York, York Minster is also one of the most magnificent cathedrals in the entire world, towering over all the buildings in the city – heck, you can see it from literally everywhere you go! And continuing with the fun facts about the impressive building that is York Minster, I must also say that it is the second biggest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe – how cool is that?

Construction began in 1230 and it “only” took 250 years to build, so you can rest assured that you’re walking inside a piece of history with its gorgeous stained glass windows and well-preserved artefacts.

Except for admiring it from the outside and a visit inside, you can also step into the crypt of York Minster or climb its central tower. One thing to note, though: there are 275 steps to the top in a narrow, steep spiral stairway, but the view is definitely worth it!

PRICE: £12.50/adult, free for kids under 16. Ticket is valid for a full year after your first visit. There is an extra fee if you want to go up to the tower (£18,50 for the cathedral + tower). Book your ticket in advance here.

TIP: If you’re into cathedral-related things, make sure you don’t miss the details on the Great East Window. It’s the biggest mediaeval stained glass in the world and it is definitely gorgeous.

4 – Shop on York’s most famous street – The Shambles

The Shambles in York
The Shambles York

Ask any English person about York, and they will tell you about The Shambles. This is definitely one of the most famous streets in the city – it is actually a pedestrianised shopping street dating from medieval times and it is also one of the best-preserved ones in Europe!

I recommend at least a short stroll on this street to admire the cute storefronts and façades. And if you’re looking for a little bit of (grime) history, know that these streets were once scattered with slaughterhouses instead of shops… Just York things! But hey, at least it’s been transformed into something nice now!

In the event that you want to hang around for longer, you can enter one of the 85 shops, drink a coffee in one of the cute cafes or grab a beer at Ye Old Shambles Tavern. Except for the iconic shops, at the Shambles Market you can find lots of stalls selling goodies and fresh produce.

TIP: There are no less than four Harry Potter-themed shops to explore on The Shambles, as well as a “Ghost Shop”. More info in the Harry Potter section below!

FUN FACT: Although I’m not sure this is 100% true, it is said that The Shambles is the inspiration behind Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter books and movies. It’s just as narrow, wonky and wonderful!

5 – Admire the spectacular view from the top of Clifford’s Tower

Clifford’s Tower in York England

Clifford’s Tower is located right in the city centre and, together with York Minster, it is considered one of the unmissable things to do in York.

Clifford’s Tower is a big piece of history in the city (part of the English Heritage) and it was a true symbol of power – it is one of the few remains of York Castle, which was built by William the Conqueror. Since then, it was burned down not once, but twice, and then rebuilt in the 13th century.

The tower also has a bit of a… sad history. Its name comes from Roger de Clifford, who was hanged for treason in 1322 right here. Hey, I told you that York has a gruesome history, right?

The truth is that there aren’t any very interesting things to see inside and most visitors just go there to climb to the top of the tower. The view from the top is pretty cool, you can see not only York Minster, but as far as North York Moors National Park!

PRICE: £9/adult. No need to book your ticket in advance, but you can do so here.

6 – See the ruins of St. Mary’s Abbey

St. Mary’s Abbey in York England
St. Mary’s Abbey in York England

St. Mary’s Abbey is part of the York Museum Gardens (which I am recommending in the “Free things to do in York” section below) and, for history lovers, it is a wonderful thing to see. You can only see the ruins now of what once was the wealthiest Benedictine monastery in the UK.

The original church was built in 1055 and you can still see its surrounding walls and the places where the monks used to pray, sing, wash their clothes and more.

PRICE: York Museum Gardens have a free entrance, including St. Mary’s Abbey

7 – Harry Potter everywhere

The Shop That Must Not Be Named in York England

York is an extra special place for all Harry Potter fans out there. There are many spots around the city that have inspired or have been inspired by the Harry Potter series.

In fact, one of the scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was filmed here – at York Railway Station, where you can see the famous Platform 9 ¾ (yes, the original platform used in the first film is in York, not Kings Cross!).

Here are some magical HP activities and places to visit in York:

8 – Weird/wonderful thing to do – Visit the Ghost Shop Merchant

The York Ghost Merchants

I didn’t know what this was, but I kept seeing massive queues outside this shop. On day 3 I asked someone (because, actually, this massive queue was there all day, every day, preventing me from getting a cool photo of the Shambles! Haha – which I never got btw!). So – basically, this shop sells… souls. 👀  Weird? Yes. Bizarre? Completely. Intriguing? Tell me more!

To really understand the traditional process of creating these little handmade ghost figures (which are said to hold a ‘spirit’), well.. you need to go into the shop and see for yourself!

The shop is on the Shambles, at no. 6. Find the location on Google Maps here.

9 – York’s Chocolate Story

York's Chocolate Story experience
© Image: York’s Chocolate Story

I just left the best for last – an activity for all chocolate lovers out there! Did you know that York’s past is tightly connected with… chocolate? The city has a long, 3.000 years-long chocolate-making history and it is the place where Rowntree’s (known as Nestlé nowadays) and Terry’s were founded.

The York Chocolate Story is an interactive guided tour during which you will learn all about York’s chocolate-making history, as well as the origins of chocolate itself and how to properly taste a chocolate bar like a connaisseur.

Of course, you will also get to indulge in sweet samples at the end – the best part of any chocolate tour, right? I definitely recommend tasting the hot chocolate as well, it is said to be the best one in town!

PRICE: £15.95/adults and £13.50/kids. Book your guided tour here. If you’re looking for more, they also have a tour + truffle rolling workshop – more details here.

TIP: Alternatively, if you want to make your own chocolate bar, you can do so at York Cocoa Works. Price is £19.50 per participant. More details here.

FUN FACT: No less than six million Kit-Kats are produced in York each and every day!

BONUS #1: 4 More free things to do in York

free things to do in York

Although I have mentioned a couple of free things to do in York above (the Shambles, the city wall and St. Mary’s Abbey), there are a couple more activities worth mentioning for all those of you looking to save a penny during your trip:

1 – The Museum Gardens

You may remember I mentioned the ruins of St. Mary’s Abbey before. These are part of a bigger museum complex called The Museum Gardens in York, all free to visit. There’s also the award-winning Yorkshire Museum to visit here for archeology fans and sometimes there are also events happening.

Even if you’re not planning on entering any of the sites here, the gardens are pretty vast and gorgeous by themselves (you can spot up to 40 species of birds!) and an excellent spot to have a picnic.

2 – National Railway Museum

The National Railway Museum in York is a very good spot for the entire family, regardless if you’re trainspotters or not! The museum offers plenty of things to see – more than 1 million pieces on display and more than 100 locomotives (including royal ones) and it is also the largest railway museum in England.

Don’t forget to take a ride on the mini-railway outside the National Railway Museum – the little ones will surely love it!

3 – Rowntree Park

For those looking for a couple of hours of peace and quiet and one of the best things to do in York for families, Rowntree Park is the perfect choice for those with kids. There are cute gardens here, as well as ducks and geese. For the little ones there’s also a dedicated playground and a skate park, and adults and older kids can enjoy the mini golf or basketball court.

TIP: If you’re an avid fan of mini golf, you can go to Puttstars Mini Golf as well!

4 – Yorkshire Lavender

If you don’t mind going a bit outside of York (24 km / 15 miles away), Yorkshire Lavender is the perfect place for flower lovers. You’ll find a lavender farm, a lavender maze and some beautiful gardens there that have received numerous awards over time.

There’s also some white deer there, as well as lambs and cattle – so cute! I also recommend going on the hill nearby for a gorgeous view over the Vale of York.

BONUS #2: 9 Extra things to do in York if you have more time

york castle museum

For those of you that are not on your first visit to the city, I have prepared a short list of extra things to do in York. Who knows, maybe this will be your perfect excuse to go and see York again!

Merchant Adventurers' Hall in York

My no. 1 tip: Buy a York Pass

explore with the york pass

I briefly mentioned the York Pass at the beginning of this article; now it’s time to get into the details. The York Pass is an excellent choice for all travellers that plan on visiting a substantial number of attractions in York, including the surrounding region of North Yorkshire.

I know some city passes out there are not worth the money, it has happened to me before. But, in my opinion, this is not the case with the York city pass.

It includes more than 45 attractions – most of the best things to do in York, actually, which means places that were on your list anyway! Plus additional discounts for restaurants, taxis and more. For me, one of the best things about this pass is that you can download it on your phone and easily use it as you go around and explore York.

The price for an adult York Pass is £55 for one day, £70 for two days and £85 for three days and it also has a 24-hour Hop On Hop Off bus included.

Let’s make a short calculation to see if it’s really worth it or not, shall we? Let’s say you want to buy the York Pass for one adult for two days. Your standard itinerary may include the following top attractions + prices:

The total for all these activities is £83. The pass is £70 for two days. Win! Also, the value increases if you buy it for 3 days and add more activities to your itinerary.

Best York tours

Things to do in York
Best York Tours

Ah, there are so many guided tours in York, and all of them are so different from each other! Below are some of my favourites:

1 – Guided walking tours – this is one of the best things to do in York and you have so many options here! My recommendation is this one that will take you to all the main attractions and tell you lots of info about York’s history.

2 – York Ghost Walk Tour – an iconic York tour if you want to find out the events of the city’s past! The Original Ghost Walk of York is £7.50 and you can book it here.

3 – The Bloody Tour of York – an alternative to the ghost walk, this one will help you explore York’s history of criminals, kings, queens and even Guy Fawkes. The tour is hosted by a girl called “mad Alice” and it’s a really unique experience. It has even won awards! Btw, they also have a ‘Bloody York Gin tour’ if you want to add some booze into your experience.

4 – Harry Potter Tour – unmissable for any HP fan out there. Book yours for £10 here (btw, this one sells out super fast, so make sure to reserve in advance!)

5 – York Cat Trail – free self-guided tour specifically tailored for cat lovers – soooo cute and great for kids!

6 – Hop On Hop Off bus – if you’re a fan of this activity (I know I am!), you can book a 24-hour bus pass for York for only £16 here.

7 – River Ouse city cruises York – River Ouse offers a picturesque way to discover the city on the water, including its most iconic attractions such as Clifford’s Tower. I recommend booking an early evening cruise, you will catch the beautiful sunset light! Book your city cruise for £12.50 here.

8 – Drive your own boat down the river – if you’re not a fan of my recommendation above and prefer to explore York’s river at your own pace, you can hire a little red boat for yourself! The price goes from £45 per group for 1h on the river and you can book yours here.

9 – The Wizard Walk of York – I mentioned the Wizard Walk of York before in the ‘Harry Potter’ section above, but I’ll mention it again. It’s perfect for kids!

10 – Invisible York – a very different type of walking experience, as this one is hosted by homeless people. Each tour is tailored differently in the centre of York and all money will help support the homeless people of York – such a nice initiative!

So book ahead of your stay if you want to indulge in that!

BOUTIQUE HOTEL. Gray’s Court – Amazing 4-star hotel with a super boutique feel. I stayed here too and I really liked it! They also have a Michelin-star restaurant worth checking out.

What to eat in York

One of the best things to do in York is, of course… eat! Although York doesn’t have traditional dishes itself, the region of Yorkshire has the following, which I definitely recommend you try:

YORKSHIRE PUDDING

A yummy, baked pudding made from a heavenly batter with eggs, flour and milk. The composition is very similar to a pancake, but the Yorkshire pudding is served as a savoury side, and usually with lots of gravy!

Yorkshire pudding

WENSLEYDALE CHEESE

Also called “Yorkshire Wensleydale”, this type of cheese originated in, you guessed it, Wensleydale, it’s crumbly and made from cow’s milk. There’s also a version of this cheese with cranberries in the mixture – yum!

You can buy it here.

Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese

YORKSHIRE CURD TART

This is basically a variation of a cheesecake, made with fresh curd and filled with currants and egg.

Yorkshire Curd Tart

YORKSHIRE TEA

Of course this part of Britain had to have its own type of tea, right? And personally, I think it’s the very best! Yorkshire Tea is a blend a black tea that has been produced since 1977.

For example, fizzy drinks were invented in Leeds, did you know that? That was in 1767! Plus, the first Marks & Spencer store was opened here and JRR Tolkien was a teacher at the University of Leeds.

7 Unmissable things to do in Leeds

There is an abundance of activities to do in Leeds. So many, that I had to divide my list into three categories: top things to do in Leeds (for people who are visiting for the first time), free tourist attractions (for those on a budget) and a bonus list with more options for those that have seen the main attractions before and are now looking for some off-the-beaten path places to see in Leeds.

Let’s start with the first list:

1 – Leeds city tour

Town Hall in Leeds UK
Leeds town hall, United Kingdom

In my opinion, the best way to discover the true flavour of a city is by walking. This is especially true in Leeds, as the city is ram packed with fun things to do and see. Every walk is an opportunity to find a new spot to check out!

Here’s my short list of the main sites in the city that you should “tick” during your walking tour: Leeds Town Hall, Leeds Civic Hall, Leeds Central Library, Millennium Square, Kirkgate Market, Leeds Corn Exchange, Leeds City Market, Hunslet Road (to see Leeds’ own flatiron building).

As for tours per se, here are your options:

NOTE: Alternatively, if you want to experience Leeds from a different perspective, I recommend taking a ride in one of the yellow water taxis. The price is only £1/person/journey and it takes you from Leeds Docks to Granary Wharf. More information on their website here. There is also a shorter, free taxi boat from Leeds Docks.

2 – See the ruins at Kirkstall Abbey House

ruins at Kirkstall Abbey House

In case you’re a fan of England’s history and charm, I definitely recommend a visit to Kirkstall Abbey to see its ruins and museum. This is one of the top attractions in Leeds and a must-do for every first time visitor!

Kirkstall Abbey is one of the most complex and well-preserved (almost completely) Cistercian abbeys in the UK. The abbey is almost 900 years old and it is located in a public park on the banks of River Aire. There are numerous routes you can take in order to see everything this place has to offer.

Abbey House Museum is made of sets that accurately resemble the buildings, shops and alleys of the Victorian era. There are also actors that wear traditional Victorian costumes on the set to make everything feel even more real – if you’re up for being immersed in the whole experience, you can even interact with them!

TIP: If the weather is nice, pack yourself a picnic lunch to enjoy on the grass near the abbey, it’s one of the most pleasant days out in Leeds!

PRICE: free. Entrance to the museum is £6/person.

By the way, you can find a lot more fun things to do in Leeds for free in this section down below.

3 – Spot wildlife at Rodley Nature Reserve

Rodley Nature Reserve in Leeds

Rodley Nature Reserve is located in Kirkstall Valley as well and it’s THE place to go if you want to witness wildlife and wetlands in all its splendour! There are lots of things to do here, from spotting various species to feeding animals or even pond-dipping.

It’s a really nice getaway only 8 km (5 miles) from Leeds city center and I recommend it whenever you want to escape the bustling city life!

PRICE: free.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The reserve is currently closed everyday except Sundays due to works to the canal swing bridge. Usually, the schedule is Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM to 5 PM.

TIP: I recommend visiting the Rodley Nature Reserve right after you’re done with Kirkstall Abbey, as they’re pretty close and this itinerary is the most structured.

4 – Take a walk in Roundhay Park

Roundhay Park in Leeds, England

Speaking of nature and taking some time to recharge our batteries… Here’s another green heaven for you! Although it’s not that easy to find beautiful portions of greenery in England’s cities, Leeds is a wonderful exception with this gorgeous park located only 5 km (3 miles) north of the city centre – in fact, it is one of the largest city parks in England!

Roundhay Park stretches over 700 acres / 2.8 square kilometres and it offers plenty of woodland, lakes and gardens and enough space to walk, run or have a picnic. Or, in case it’s summer and you’re getting tired of walking, you can always hop on the “train” and take a circuit of the entire park every 15 minutes.

FUN FACT: This is the only park in Leeds that hosts a family of meerkats. So cute!

By the way, while you’re here, make sure you visit Tropical World as well, which is right inside the park and it’s one of the most appreciated family-friendly places to visit in Leeds. This zoo hosts various species of butterflies (they have an entire butterfly house!) as well as monkeys, rare birds, bats, crocodiles and more.

PRICE: free. Admission to Tropical World is £5/adult. Children under 5 can enter for free.

5 – Do some Leeds shopping

6 – Sip a drink in one of the best cocktail bars in the country

Visit a cocktail bar in Leeds, England

Did you know that Leeds hosts some of THE best cocktail bars in the entire country? If you take a look at this list of 50 top cocktail bars in the UK, you’ll see that Leeds is home to 4 of them (by comparison, London has 5). So if you weren’t planning on exploring some deliciously ingenious drinks, now you should!

Here are the 4 cocktail bars from the top list above:

There are also rooftop bars to choose from such as Headrow House or The Alchemist (at Trinity Shopping Centre).

7 – Enjoy the nightlife on Call Lane

Call Lane Leeds nightlife clubs

Because Leeds is a lively university city, you can expect the nightlife here to be the same – very, very young. The best spot to experience this is called “Call Lane” and most people compare it to the well-known Canal Street in Manchester – just so you can get an idea.

In short, Call Lane is a long street (pedestrianised during the weekends), scattered with bars and nightclubs.

Here are some of the most popular places to check out on Call Lane:

If you’re looking to chase the night, or want to dance till closing, some clubs to add to your list are: Revolución de Cuba, The Backroom, Fibre.

NOTE: Most clubs in Leeds are open until 3 AM.

NOTE #2: Not a fan of Call Lane? You can also check out Millennium Square or Park Row.

BONUS #1: 7 Free things to do in Leeds

Leeds City Museum in England

I know that some of my activity suggestions in this Leeds city guide are already free, such as the parks or the nature reserve, but guess what? There’s more! Which is why I have created this separate list of places to go in Leeds if you don’t want to spend a penny but still enjoy yourself (btw, most of them are indoor activities in Leeds):

1 – Leeds City Museum

If you’re a museum fan, I definitely recommend Leeds City Museum, especially if you’re travelling with children. This museum has no less than 6 different exhibitions and it’s the place to learn more about Leeds’ history. Plus, they have a dedicated Toddler Town inside the museum where you can leave your little one to do some arts and crafts – how amazing is that for a museum that has free entry?!

Although it has free entrance, this well-known art gallery hosts one of the most impressive collections of 20th century British art with authors such as James Tissot or Henry Moore. Except for this, the notable building is to be taken into consideration too (like for many other tourist attractions in Leeds, as I’ve said this numerous times before, haha!) with a stunning Victorian staircase that will surely impress you. If you love art, now you know where to go!

If you’re planning on visiting Leeds Art Gallery, make sure you add the Craft Centre to your list as well, as it’s right underneath. If the art gallery is for 20th century arts, this place showcases new generations of artists and designers from all around the country – glass, wood, ceramics and more.

tetley gallery in leeds

Okay, I’m not done with the art galleries! This one’s an independent art gallery that opened in 2011, combined with a cafe – Cafe 164. Here you can admire an eclectic mix of art, ranging from photography to illustration and even printmaking, while also sipping on a cup of good coffee and indulging in a scone.

5 – Royal Armouries Museum

In case you’re a fan of war-related remnants and treasures, the Royal Armouries Museum is the place for you. Here you’ll find bullets, pistols, cannons, as well as Henry VIII’s tournament armour and lots more. And even if you’re not a history buff, this museum is still impressive, with more than 8.500 items on display divided into 6 different galleries, including oriental pieces or objects from the present day for comparison.

6 – The Tetley

If you like art galleries in general, know that The Tetley is… something else. This amazing, free entry place (and I cannot stress this enough!) hosts a masterfully curated selection of contemporary artists from all around the globe. Films, installations, sculptures, free talks and events – you can find everything here and then some. And if you’re travelling with kids, they also have child-friendly events.

7 – Meanwood Valley Trail

Last but not least, a walk in the park. Well, not really, as the Meanwood Valley Trail is 11 km (7 miles) long. Luckily, it is divided into 3 different sections in case you want to take a break. Why am I recommending it? Because it’s the perfect activity for people who want to explore Leeds’ woodland and paddocks, from Woodhouse Moor up to the Golden Acre Park.

Best restaurants in Leeds

Best restaurants in Leeds

Now, this is my subject of expertise! I tried lots of eateries while in Leeds, so now I can present to you my personally curated list of the best Leeds restaurants divided by themes:

BREAKFAST

LUNCH

DINNER

DRINKS

Although all of them are very good, I can personally recommend two of them out of the bunch – Fazenda, which is literally all you can eat meat (boyfriend loved that) and Iberica (my choice), where the food was insanely good and really well presented. I’m getting hungry just by thinking about the place!

What to eat in Leeds

Although Leeds doesn’t have traditional dishes itself, the region of Yorkshire has the following, which I definitely recommend you try:

8 Amazing Things to Do in Nusa Ceningan, Bali

Planning a trip to Nusa Ceningan island or all three Nusa islands on the Southeast Coast of Bali, Indonesia? That sounds like an amazing plan!

You must now be looking for all the best things to do in Nusa Ceningan. That’s great because you opened the right article, my friend. From the Blue Lagoon to Secret beach and cliff jumping at Mahana Point, get ready to read everything you need to know to visit Ceningan island!

If you’re planning an extensive trip to visit all three Nusa Islands, these two blog post will be useful to you as well:

Or, if you’re looking for a round-up on all three, this is the full blog post for you:
Complete Guide to the Nusa Islands, Bali.

Where is Nusa Ceningan Island?

Nusa Ceningan Bali is a small island a short boat ride away from the Balinese coast in Indonesia. The boat actually drops you at the larger island of Nusa Lembongan, which is connected to Nusa Ceningan by a narrow yellow bridge.

Whether you choose to stay on popular Nusa Lembongan or prefer the more remote Nusa Ceningan, you can easily explore both by scooter as the islands are easily covered in a few hours or a day trip.

With crystal-clear waters, palm trees, dramatic cliffs and fun, social beach club vibes, many come here in search of the tropical island life feel that Bali mainland seems to have lost.

Here’s a map of Nusa Ceningan to see exactly where the below places are located:

map of Nusa Ceningan and other Nusa Islands

Round up of the best things to do in Nusa Ceningan

Nusa Ceningan Bali is the smallest of the three islands, with a laid-back vibe, perfect for relaxation away from the crowds.

Keep in mind that there aren’t as many restaurants and bars here compared with the other two above. But still, with tons of awesome things to do, you won’t get bored!

Here are some unmissable things to do in Nusa Ceningan by travel style:

1 – Cliff jump at the Blue Lagoon

Cliff jump at the Blue Lagoon Nusa Ceningan

The Blue Lagoon has one of the most beautiful shades of turquoise I have ever seen and it’s definitely up high on everyone’s itinerary for Nusa Ceningan.

But there’s more to the Nusa Ceningan Blue Lagoon than you might expect! If you’re looking for a bit of a thrill, this is the place for you.

The rocky cliffs around the cove of the Blue Lagoon is the best cliff jumping point in Bali for experienced cliff jumping. I’m talking drops between 4 and 13 meters (wowcha!).

Not feeling adventurous? If you’re not down for a cliff jump, you can just sit on the rocks and enjoy the view at Nusa Ceningan Blue Lagoon.

The glittering water, the scenic landscape, the waves crash into the cliffside, the setting sun… just hope you don’t see anyone belly flop!

2 – Swim with Manta Rays

Snorkelling diving with manta rays Indonesia

There are some incredible diving and snorkelling spots around the Islands. The most famous spot is Manta Bay. Here you can swim with a squadron of gigantic manta rays, amongst other sea life while exploring the incredible underwater world.

Private or group tours to Manta Bay can be arranged from any of the three Nusas.

Some great diving tours:

3 – Visit the best beaches in Nusa Ceningan

Secrect Beach Nusa ceningan

Everyone knows Bali has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and Nusa Ceningan, although such a small island, is no exception.

At the ends of the bumpy roads of Nusa Ceningan, you can find some incredible spots with different features, from paradisiac sandy beaches with quiet waters to rocky shores where the waves crash.

My favourite beaches are: Secret Beach (which is now not-so-secret-anymore) and Song Tepo Beach.

You can also add The Sand Nusa Ceningan as a notable beach with plenty of good reviews, but we didn’t get to visit it.

4 – Surf or cliff jump at Mahana Point

Mahana Point Nusa Ceningan

Mahana Point is a cliffside restaurant that offers amazing ocean views and three of the best cliff-jumping platforms on the islands. The restaurant has three cliff jumping diving boards and the system of pay-per-jump, where visitors can jump and climb back up using the ladder.

Mahana Point is also the name of the surf spot, named after the restaurant, a reef break for intermediate level surfers.

In case you’re not interested in surfing the waves or taking the leap at Mahana Point cliff jump, you can simply chill out, grab a bintang (local beer) and admire the view.

TIP: If you want to cliff jump, make sure you visit at high tide when the water is deepers.

Price: 50,000 IDR (3.50 US$) for the higher cliff jump and 25,000 IDR (1.75 US$) for the smaller cliff jump.

5 – Enjoy a cocktail at a beach club

Nusa Ceningan Swings
Nusa Ceningan Sea Breeze Beach Club

Beach clubbing is a rising trend and Bali provides some of the best. Whether you’re looking for a secluded poolside hidden gem or a fun and social atmosphere, Nusa Ceningan has some great beach club options for a sunny day session.

My favourites in Nusa Ceningan are Sea Breeze Beach Club for its fun, social vibe, or if you are feeling something fancier, check out Klyf Club on the other side of the island with views of the Blue Lagoon and great food options.

6 – Take pictures with the beach swings

Dream Beach Nusa Lembongan

You’ll find sets of swings hidden across the beaches on the islands. Some set in the water, some on the white sand – either way, they’re fun for a chill or to take a photo!

Keep your eyes open for them!

Below are the ones we found:

7 – Cross the iconic Yellow Bridge to Nusa Lembongan

Things to do in Nusa Ceningan

Yes, the Yellow Bridge that connects Nusa Ceningan to Nusa Lembongan is an attraction by itself! I recommend crossing it in order to take some pictures, but also to visit Nusa Lembongan – it would be a shame not to!

Aferall, this famous yellow bridge is a landmark in itself!

The bridge isn’t wide enough to let cars cross, so you’ll need to take a scooter or walk.

8 – Zipline across the water

Ziplining in Nusa Ceningan

Here’s another suggestion for the adventure-seekers: you can go zip lining across the cliffs at Abyss Zipline, which is right at Nusa Ceningan Resort.

Afterwards, you can unwind and enjoy the cliff top pool while sipping on a cocktail or a beer at the bar (Driftwood Bar).

How to get to Nusa Ceningan

How to get to the Nusa Islands

You cannot get to Nusa Ceningan directly from Bali. The most popular route is via Nusa Lembongan (where most people tend to stay during their trip) to Nusa Ceningan.

Bali to Nusa Ceningan Island

Nusa Lembongan to Nusa Ceningan Island

There’s a famous yellow bridge connecting Nusa Lembongan to Nusa Ceningan called the “The Bridge of Love” as it has been renamed after its reconstruction in 2017. You can easily cross it by scooter or walk, but it’s too narrow for cars.

Nusa Penida to Nusa Ceningan Island

If you, on the other hand, want to reach Nusa Ceningan from Nusa Penida island, you can take a local boat at Toya Pakeh harbour. The ride only takes 15 minutes and the price is 50.000 IDR (3.50 US$) per person one-way.

How to get around Nusa Ceningan island

getting around Bali by scooter
how to get around Nusa Ceningan island

If you’re only visiting Nusa Ceningan, the good news is that you can easily explore Nusa Ceningan on foot or bike, without the need to rent a scooter. Walking is completely free (a great advantage) and bikes cost 60.000 (4.20 US$) for an entire day.

But if you want to visit Nusa Lembongan as well, for example, I recommend renting a motorbike or scooter, especially if you’re a confident driver.

It’s a fun and easy way to explore the island and see the hidden and hard-to-reach places. The roads are much quieter than on mainland Bali and with less traffic, it feels much safer too.

There is a small yellow bridge that connects Nusa Lembongan to Nusa Ceningan, so it’s easy to cover both islands in a couple of hours’ drive.

NOTE: Thinking about renting a car? Think again! You can only reach Nusa Ceningan by bike as the connecting bridge is not wide enough for cars to pass.

8 Incredible Things to Do in Nusa Lembongan Island, Bali

If you’re searching for a quieter, remote form of paradise in Bali, you need to jump on a boat and travel 30 minutes southeast to the three Nusa Islands. And if Lembongan is your main choice, this complete guide will tell you everything about the 8 unmissable things to do in Nusa Lembongan, Bali!

Where is Nusa Lembongan Bali?

Nusa Lembongan is one of the three Nusa islands off the Southeast coast of Bali.

Known for its turquoise waters and soft white sand, Nusa Lembongan Bali sets the perfect island vibe. Even though it’s the most touristic of the three islands, it still has only a fraction of the crowds you find on Bali mainland and makes for the perfect island getaway.

Nusa Penida is the biggest, Nusa Ceningan the smallest and Nusa Lembongan the most popular, but each is worth a visit in its own right.

Luckily, it’s very easy to travel between all three with boat transfers!

Here’s a handy Nusa Lembongan Map

Before we get started, here’s a useful Nusa Lembongan map that showcases all the places and spots I’ll be talking about below. Remember to save it for later!

Get to Nusa Lembongan Island

If you’re looking for complete, in-depth guides for the other two Nusa Islands, here they are:

8 Best things to do in Nusa Lembongan, Bali

Nusa Lembongan Island Bali

Visiting Nusa Lembongan island is a great way to relax, unwind, sunbathe and swim.

Tourists usually visit Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan for one or two days, and then its a short boat trip over to Nusa Penida. If you want to relax and take it slow, I would suggest to stay for an entire week and explore all three Nusa Islands.

Keep scrolling for my shortlist of things to do in Nusa Lembongan island:

1 – Visit the best beaches in Nusa Lembongan

Dream Beach Nusa Lembongan

One of the top things to do in Nusa Lembongan is to rent a scooter and hop your way around the islands beautiful white sand beach. With crystal clear waters and stretches of empty sand, you’ll be living the life of a Bali beach bum before you know it.

Although some of them have too much of a local vibe or are too remote to reach, I’d say that there are enough pristine white sand beaches in Nusa Lembongan to check out during your stay!

My favourite Nusa Lembongan beaches:

FUN FACT: There are numerous swings (a famous Bali attraction, after all), on numerous Nusa Lembongan beaches such as Dream Beach, Sea Breeze and The Sand. Make sure to check them out for a little bit of fun and some cute photos!

2 – Go to the beach clubs

Nusa Islands Beach Clubs

Checking out a beach club is the second best thing to do in Nusa Lembongan after hitting the beaches. I mean… you’re already on the beach by now, right? A beach club is a perfect spot to drink a coffee or a cocktail or eat a delicious lunch while sitting in the shade and taking a break from the sun.

Given the popularity that Nusa Lembongan has acquired over the years, tons of beach clubs have started popping up on the shores of the island.

MY FAVOURITE BEACH CLUBS:

3 – Day trip to Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida

things to do in nusa ceningan

In case you get bored on Lembongan, a day trip to either of the other two islands, Nusa Ceningan or Nusa Penida island is an excellent choice.

Nusa Ceningan Island

This small island is located between Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida and it’s tiny but charming. In order to get there, you just need to cross the iconic Yellow Bridge (this famous yellow bridge is a MUST visit during your trip) with a scooter, bike or by walking.

Nusa Penida Island

The biggest out of the three islands, this one can be reached on a 15-minute boat trip from Nusa Lembongan. There are MANY things to do there and I’ve covered them all in this article: 6 Top Things to Do in Nusa Penida.

4 – Snorkel or dive with manta rays

snorkeling tour diving with manta rays

The most special activity you can do during your visit to the Nusa Islands is to snorkel or dive with giant manta rays. These incredible, majestic creatures are found in the waters between Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida, along with sunfish and dolphins!

There are countless companies across all three islands offering both private and group tours. Some excellent dive sites for great Nusa Lembongan snorkelling are Manta Point, Crystal Point and Mangrove Point, where you can see living corals too!

Most of these will require a short boat trip from the island to get to the exact location where it’ll be more likely to encounter some unique, colourful marine life.

Some great diving tours:

5 – See the sunset at Devil’s Tear or other viewpoints

Going to a viewpoint to admire the sea and the sunset is one of the best things to do in Nusa Lembongan at the end of the day! Here are my two favourite spots:

Day trip to Nusa Lembongan

Devil’s Tear

On the west coast of the island, Devil’s Tear is where you’ll probably see the best sunset in Nusa Lembongan! This iconic cliffside viewpoint called ‘Devil’s Tears’ demonstrates just how powerful the sea can be. With waves crashing hard against the rocks, the underwater caves spray out mist when filled by the water. You can get there by scooter in around 10 minutes from anywhere on Lembongan and it is best to arrive around 5 PM for the best experience. Be careful, mind the splash zone and keep an eye out for dolphins as I heard that they can often be spotted.

TIP #1: This blowhole can be dangerous, so make sure you don’t get too close to the edge!

TIP #2: By the way, while you’re here, make sure to check out the rock Pools / Tidal Pools (a little bit to the right of Devil’s Tear) for an amazing sunset view.

Panorama point on the island Nusa Lembongan

Panorama Point

Panorama Point is located between Jungut Batu Beach and Mushroom Bay and it’s a great spot to see the whole island from above and take some unforgettable pictures!

TIP: This place might be a bit hard to find; I recommend setting ‘Panorama restaurant’ as your destination on Google Maps in order to get there.

6 – Take a mangrove forest boat tour

mangrove forest in Nusa Lembongan

Taking a mangrove boat tour is definitely one of the most popular things to do as a Nusa Lembongan day trip.

They offer local boat trips of the Mangrove forest found on the northeast of the island. You’ll find tours offered on fishing boats (for around 50.000 / 3.50 USD, open to bargaining) or you can rent a canoe or paddle board if you’d rather go exploring the lush, dense mangrove forest solo – you’ll have fun either way!

7 – Check out the surf spots

surfing in Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan

Whether you’re already into surfing or you’re planning to give it a try, Nusa Lembongan has some amazing reef breaks, keeping the waves pretty consistent all year round.

Two good intermediate Nusa Lembongan surf spots are Playgrounds and Tamarind. And if you want to take some surfing lessons, I recommend going to Coconuts Beach!

8 – Do some yoga

activities in nusa lembongan

Bali is a well-known spot for yoga – and Nusa Lembongan is, of course, no exception. If you’re up for a calming activity that requires some stretching, relaxation and meditation, you’ll feel right at home on this island.

One of the most popular spots for yoga on the island is Yoga Shack near Jungutbatu Beach. Another place with good recommendations is Serenity Yoga Lembongan – and they also accept walk-ins!

Where to stay in Nusa Lembongan

Best hotel Nusa Lembongan with outdoor swimming pool
Where to stay Nusa Lembongan

Now that you know all about the best activities and things to see in Nusa Lembongan, let’s talk about where you’re going to stay during your time on the island.

Below you’ll find my top hand-picked hotels in Nusa Lembongan:

How to get to Nusa Lembongan

Getting from Nusa Lembongan to Nusa Ceningan

As I mentioned before, all three islands are easily accessible if you’re already in Bali – especially Nusa Lembongan!

The most popular departing point to the islands is Sanur Harbour in Bali. Basically, once you arrive at the harbour, then the rest is a breeze. The drive to the harbour takes 60-90min from Ubud and Uluwatu, 60min from Canggu and 40min from Seminyak.

There are plenty of companies that can take you from Bali to Nusa Lembongan. The most reputable companies are: Scoot, Marlin and Rocky. The majority of boats leave from Sanur Harbour (it’s the most convenient) but some (Rocky) leave from Serangan Pier

TIP: Make sure to check with your accommodation on the island before you book. Often, they will include transportation in the cost of the stay or can help you to arrange the journey over.

Boat Ride Duration: 30 minutes

Ticket Price: 500.000 to 650.000 IDR (36 to 46 US$) for the roundtrip ride (including hotel pick up and drop off).

Schedule: there are normally 4 boats each day per company.

I have also found this very convenient fast boat to Nusa Lembongan that you can book in advance.

How to get around the island

getting around nusa islands
Scooter rental Nusa Lembongan

Luckily, Nusa Lembongan is small and easy to zip around by motorbike, scooter or even a bike. You can also explore Nusa Lembongan by car if you would prefer, but you won’t be able to reach the other two islands with it (you can’t even cross the Yellow Bridge with a car, as it’s too narrow), which is why most tourists don’t prefer this means of transportation.

All in all, the best idea would be to get around with a scooter. I would 100% recommend it! It’s a fun and easy way to explore the island and see the hidden and hard-to-reach places. The roads are much quieter than on mainland Bali and with less traffic, it feels much safer too.

The average price of ascooter rental is around 70,000 IDR (5 US$) per day. The easiest option is to rent one from your hotel if they offer this price or something similar. If not, as you arrive at the harbour there will be people renting scooters for around this price. If you choose to opt for renting a scooter from the pier, remember two things: you can bargain the price and make sure to check the scooter’s condition before paying!

Where to eat on Nusa Lembongan

Where to eat in Nusa Lembongan

There are numerous good places to eat on Nusa Lembongan, but here are my favourites that I discovered during my trip:

TIP: It may sound surprising, but it’s always a good idea to call ahead, as many places offer a free transport service to collect and drop you off at your hotel. Perfect if you want to enjoy a couple of drinks or don’t want to drive your scooter home in the dark!

My top Nusa Lembongan tips

Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida

Now that you know everything there is to do, see and eat here, let me give you some of my most precious bits of advice before you leave:

TAKE CASH

Come prepared with enough cash for your stay as the ATMs across the island are not always reliable. Some of the beach clubs and restaurants accept card payment, but it’s better to play it safe!

EXPECT A HIGHER PRICE TAG

Island life comes with a higher price as everything has to be imported from mainland Bali. You can still find cheap warungs, but expect a general rise in prices, especially if you’re going to the beach clubs. It is what it is!

BRING SOME WET WIPES WITH YOU

This advice is especially good if you’re riding a scooter on the islands. The roads can be dusty so it’s good to have these on hand so you don’t look like you belong in the cast of Mad Max in all your photos. For the same reason, it’s also good to carry a mask with you so you can cover your mouth and nose.

BRING A SCARF TOO

Here’s a golden tip from someone that has driven lots of scooters in Bali (read: me!): leave a scarf to cover your scooter’s seat whenever you park. This way, the seat won’t be burning when you return to your scooter!

Ultimate Guide to the Munduk Waterfalls Trail, Bali

To most people, Bali means rice fields, beaches, villas and resort living at its finest. But this gem of a location in Indonesia is so much more than that! Bali has lots of natural wonders and today I’ll tell you all about the Munduk Waterfalls Trail that will take you to no less than 4 beautiful waterfalls in Bali.

This hidden paradise is located within the lush forests of the Munduk Mountains in North Bali and it’s the best idea for waterfall lovers. This part of the country is not typically visited by many tourists, so you can rest assured that you’ll be able to enjoy a more laid back atmosphere and some peace of mind.

The entire trek takes around 3 hours to see all 4 Munduk waterfalls. Round Trip. There are, however, some important things to know before you go and I will tell you everything in the article below.

Let’s go!

First of all, where are the Munduk waterfalls located?

things to do in munduk bali

Munduk waterfalls are located 15 minutes away from Munduk Village, in North Bali, in Bali’s countryside. The starting point for the Munduk waterfall hike is located 2 hours from Ubud and a few hours from Lovina by car.

Munduk waterfall trek map

There are many more falls in this area’s lovely scenery, but I selected the 4 most popular and stunning waterfalls that I recommend you visit (and that are typically part of this trek). Here they are on the map below:

Munduk waterfall trek map

TIP #1: For ease of orientation, I recommend downloading the maps.me application and the offline map for the region, so you can get around easily in case you get lost. It will be useful especially for making your way back. Just set “Laangan Melanting” as your destination and follow the route suggested. You can also take a physical map from the guesthouses around, but the app is better.

TIP #2: There are two ways of doing this hike, as it’s a loop-shaped trek. I recommend starting with Golden Valley Waterfall and ending with Melanting. You can also do it the other way around, but the option I’m recommending will ensure you’re not hiking the path uphill a lot, so the entire trek will be much easier.

TIP #3: The entire trek will take approximately 3 hours if you want to take your time and see all the waterfalls I’m mentioning in this article. They’re only a short walk away from each other, but it’s best to take your time (and maybe have a swim!).

How to reach Munduk Waterfall

where is Munduk located

As I mentioned above, the Munduk waterfall location is in North Bali, Indonesia. Here is the travel time by car from some well-known cities:

They’re also conveniently located near some other well-known tourist attractions such as the Twin Lakes, Pura Ulun Danu Beratan Temple (or simply Pura Bratan) and Handara Gate. This means you can easily include a trek to the falls in your Bali itinerary!

NOTE: In case you’re touring Bali with a rented motorbike or scooter, you should note that the Munduk area is quite hilly, so it’s not really recommended to navigate it on two wheels if you’re not very experienced or very comfortable with your driving skills.

Most tourists that decide to do this trek will choose to spend at least 1 night (preferably 2) in Munduk Village. This way you ensure you won’t have to book a private driver to take you to the starting point; you can simply walk from the village to the first stop on the itinerary or, even better, you can ask for transportation at the accommodation – some of them offer complimentary shuttles.

In case you don’t want to spend the night before the hike, the best idea would be to book a private driver to take you to the starting point (it’s a 5-minute drive from Munduk Village).

If you decide to get there by scooter, set “Munduk Waterfalls Parking Lot” as your destination on Maps. The parking fee is 2.000 IDR (0.14 USD).

Once you arrive in the parking lot, you must continue walking downhill (you can either take the walkway or the paved steps) to the waterfall entrance, 15 minutes away. Then cross a small bamboo bridge and you have arrived at the first waterfall!

The trail – explained

IMPORTANT NOTE TO KEEP IN MIND: my recommended route below will take you from the top down, which means all the walking will be a lot easier to do instead of doing it in reverse and having to climb a steep path and lots of stairs.

1 – Munduk Village

This small village is the starting point, where I recommend spending the night before the trek to recharge your batteries if you can. There are various accommodations here, including Ekommunity, which I definitely recommend. You can find some other hotel recommendations in the dedicated section below.

2 – Golden Valley Waterfall

Golden Valley Waterfall Munduk
Golden Valley Waterfall Munduk

Golden Valley is the first waterfall on the trek and I recommend starting with it – it’s only a 10-minute walk from the starting point and it’s pretty quiet too. It’s definitely not as impressive as the next three waterfalls (some even say it’s the least impressive), but it’s still a lovely spot to start your adventure. You can also start your day with a good breakfast and some delicious Bali coffee at the Eco Café (Eco Cafe 1 on Google Maps) nearby, and take in the view of Golden Valley falls at the same time – it’s a glorious viewpoint!

DIFFICULTY: easy

ENTRANCE FEE: 10.000 IDR (0.70 USD)

SWIMMING: no, this waterfall doesn’t have a swimming area

3 – Munduk Waterfall / Red Coral Waterfall

Red Coral Waterfall Munduk

Red Coral Waterfall, also known as Munduk Waterfall, is relatively close to Golden Valley. It’s also one of the busier spots in this trail, but it’s truly gorgeous and really high, even though it may look small in some pictures! Here, you can enjoy the magnificent view of the waterfall itself surrounded by lush nature.

TIP: Prepare to get wet, though, as Red Coral Waterfall is quite powerful, and make sure to protect your camera from the spray of the falls.

DIFFICULTY: easy – very few stairs. The only tiny challenge to manage will be a (not too risky) bamboo bridge at the end of the hike.

ENTRANCE FEE: 20.000 IDR (1.4o USD)

SWIMMING: no, this waterfall doesn’t have a swimming area

4 – Labuhan Kebo Waterfall

After a 10-minute hike from Red Coral and about 100 steps down, you’ll reach the third waterfall: Labuhan Kebo waterfall. This area is flocked by a lot of tourists because it’s the best place to take a dip and enjoy the cold water of the falls. This waterfall has two rock pools where you can swim and a toilet where you can change into your swimming outfit.

Labuhan is pretty impressive and powerful too, so make sure you protect your camera! There’s also a lot of sun glare here, so it might be challenging to take good pictures if you’re visiting on a sunny day.

DIFFICULTY: medium; although getting there will be easy peasy with only 100 steps to descend, getting back up might be a tiny challenge as you’ll have to climb the same steps again to continue your journey

ADMISSION FEE: 10.000 IDR (0.70 USD)

SWIMMING: yes, this is the best swimming waterfall out of them all; it has a big swimming pool at the base, splitting into two smaller rock pools with relatively shallow water

5 – Melanting Waterfall / Laangan Melanting

Melanting Waterfall Munduk
Melanting Waterfall Munduk

To end your trek, you’ll have to traverse a rocky track that leads to the beautiful Laangan Melanting waterfall. They keep the best for last because Melanting is really the most beautiful and powerful waterfall of them all! This means it also gets busy, being so close to the village, but it’s definitely worth it to take your time and enjoy it.

DIFFICULTY: medium; there are 470 solid yet steep steps to get to Melanting Waterfall, so you may need to take a few breaks along the way

ADMISSION FEE: 10.000 IDR (0.70 USD)

SWIMMING: no. Although this waterfall has a pool at its base, there is  water flowing with such power that I really don’t recommend swimming here.

From Melanting, which is the final waterfall, you just need to get back to the village by descending away from the waterfalls instead of going up the stairs. The road can get quite muddy at times (it’s a dirt trail, mind you), so keep this in mind when choosing the right shoes for your trek – find my recommendations in the ‘Packing list’ section below. You’ll soon reach the main road again.

TIP: You can also visit Banyumala Twin Falls if you have the time, although it is not close to Munduk Village like the ones on this route. But if you’re planning on going to Sekumpul or Gitgit, it’s definitely worth adding this one to your itinerary as well. This double stream fall is said to be one of the most gorgeous ones out of all the Bali waterfalls and you can also swim there.

Where to stay in Munduk, Bali

As I mentioned before, staying in the village before you proceed on your Munduk Waterfall journey is a great idea – especially considering this is quite a budget location! There are various homestays and local hotels where you can book a room for an excellent price.

Here are my recommended accommodations, sorted by budget:

LUXURY: Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa – brilliant location overlooking the valley and flawless service

MID-RANGE: Munduk Menir Villas – a nice guesthouse where you can book rooms or entire villas with private pools for some very accessible prices.

BUDGET: Nadya Homestay – a great budget option with a restaurant (nice, tasty lunch options here), snack bar, terrace and outdoor pool. Plus some pretty unbeatable prices!

My top travel tips for doing the Munduk waterfall hike

My top travel tips for doing the Munduk waterfall hike

Trekking this trail requires enough preparation for you to get the most out of your hike. And I’m here to tell you all my precious travel tips to keep in mind!

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SHOES.

Make sure that you’re wearing comfortable shoes with good grip so it’s easier to traverse uneven and uphill parts of the trail. There are some portions with dirt trails, so I definitely recommend against wearing flip flops.

USE AN OFFLINE MAPS APPLICATION.

You can either use Google Maps or, even better, maps.me which has an offline map function. Even though you can also get your own physical map of Munduk Waterfall from the village, the online one works better for me.

START YOUR ADVENTURE EARLY.

It’s good to start early to avoid the crowd and the midday heat.

BRING WATER AND SNACKS.

Although there are a few warungs along the scenic route where you can buy coffee, water or food, it’s important to bring your own as well, and especially enough water. You’ll have enough stairs to climb and the last thing you want is to get dehydrated, trust me! Some snacks to munch on while trekking will also be more than welcome.

BRING CASH.

They don’t accept any credit card for the admission fee, so make sure you have small bills with you.

FAQs about the Munduk Waterfall trek

Waterfall Bali
Munduk Bali

Now let’s find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about visiting the waterfalls in Munduk:

1 – How much does it cost?

Visiting the waterfalls in Munduk on this trail is one of the best budget activities you can do in Bali, Indonesia. Each of the falls has a fixed fee of either 10.000 or 20.000 IDR, which makes the total Munduk Waterfall entrance fee 50.000 IDR (3.50 USD). The parking fee is 2.000 IDR per bike, which is literally nothing (0.14 USD).

TIP: They only accept cash at the entrance, so make sure you have it with you. No credit card accepted.

2 – How difficult is the Munduk waterfall loop trek?

I say it’s pretty easy, moderate at maximum. Plus, it doesn’t take long either – 2-3 hours if you do it in my suggested order and if you’re relatively fit. Melanting Waterfall (the last one)is probably the most challenging one out of them all, so if you know you’re not good with steps, you can always skip it.

3 – How long does the entire hike take?

It really depends on how much you stop in one place and how long you want to swim, but it usually takes 2 to 3 hours in total as a round trip.

4 – Best time to visit

The best time to visit Bali is, in general, the dry season (April-October). As for the trek, I recommend doing it early in the morning so you can avoid the crowds and the midday heat. And yes, you can do it as a day trip.

5 – Packing list

6 – Do I need to pack food and drinks?

I know I answered this already, but I just can’t stress this enough: yes, pack enough water (and snacks if you want them) for a moderate 3-hour trek, just to be on the safe side! There are a few basic restaurants along the way, but it’s always good to have your own supplies as well.

7 – Do I need a guide?

No, not at all, especially if you have your smartphone map on hand just like I mentioned in my Tips section above.
